Art walk!
Regular readers will know that I’m not really an exclamation type of guy. So you know either something’s a little off with me right now or I’m just really excited about an art walk.
What is an art walk you ask? I’m still trying to figure that out myself. But then again, I didn’t know what a block association was until a few months ago, and here you are on the cusp of self-actualization and understanding your purpose in life after stumbling across some website I put together.
What I think an art walk is is a walk around some Chelsea art galleries with some neighbors who enjoy either art or light conversation—maybe even both. I talked that idea over with Susan Numeroff, the leader of a Chelsea block association for 21st, 22nd, and 23rd Streets, and she suggested I reach out to an individual named Cyndie Bellen-Berthezene, who is the founder of a children’s art initiative called Time In. Cyndie’s idea was to get an artist guide to walk us around to a few local galleries and have a sort of interactive conversation about some of the pieces when we get inside the galleries.
I think this is a really cool idea and you should respond to this post if you’re interested in it. Of course, if we got an artist guide to walk us around, I’m anticipating that we would pay him or her for the time—maybe something in the order of $30. After all, if you’re good at something, never do it for free, which happens to function as an unfortunate commentary on my skills as a block association organizer if you know anything about the amount of dues we’ve been collecting. But the money is details we can work out later. Right now I’m trying to gauge interest and you should let me know if the essence of this catches yours.
